Mukesh Ambani says Jio won't be free after March 31, announces Jio Prime

Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani is making some big Jio related announcements today. He will start his press broadcast at 1.30pm and a live stream is going to be available for it. So what is he going to announce? Your guess is as good as mine. But we can speculate. It is going to do something with the Jio user growth, which we hear is either very close to the 100 million mark or has already surpassed it. At the same time, there are likely to be updates related to Jio future plan after its Happy New Year offer expires on March 31. Irrespective of what is announced, you can keep checking here. We will update the Jio announcements in real time.

Update: And that is all. So basically, this conference was about clearing the air on Jio after March 31. The paid offers seem pretty good it seems, especially considering the fact that theoretically you are getting the 30GB data per month at a price of Rs 303. Of course, for that you will also have to subscribe to the Rs 99 Jio Prime membership. This membership can be obtained through the My Jio app or by visiting any Jio-supported store.

Update: Ambani announces Jio Prime offer for the existing users. "All those who have shown confidence in us and are already Jio users, can get Jio Prime membership," he says. So what is this Jio Prime?
Here are the details:
1- Rs 99 per year will get the Jio Prime membership. This is only available to existing Jio users. Also users who join Jio network will be eligible for the Prime membership.
2- Once you are a Jio Prime member, you will be able to pay Rs 303 per month and get the same free Jio services that you get now. This means unlimited data (subjected to 1GB FUP limit per day) you will get for a price of Rs 303 per month for 12 months. Looks like a quite neat deal if you like Jio network.
3- The voice calls will continue to be free.
Update: After March 31, Jio will be a paid service, says Mukesh Ambani. But Jio will offer the most affordable rates, he says. Ambani says that hundreds of new plans have been launched by other telecoms and that has created a lot of confusion. But with Jio, he says, there is no confusion. After March 31, Jio will match each and every plan that other operators are offering or will offer at the same rate but with 20 per cent more data.
Update: "With Jio it is my promise that we will provide World class quantity and quality of data at prices that are affordable," says Ambani.
Update: Jio has more than 2X 4G base stations compared to the combined capacity of all other operators in India. "We plan to double this in the coming months and will offer Jio coverage to 99 per cent Indians," says Ambani.
--
Update: In a 200 crore minute of voice and video calls. Before Jio India was 150th in broadband penetration in the world. But last months 100 crore gigabytes of data was consumed on Jio network, says Ambani. "Today India is number 1 country in the world for mobile use data," he says. Almost all of this data is consumed with video and that makes Jio the largest video data network in the world.
"You have shown that India can adopt the digital life," says Ambani. He wants India to be among the top 5 countries in terms of broadband connectivity.
Update: "For over 170 days Jio has added 7 customers every second." This is unprecedented for any technology company in the world, says Ambani.
Update: "My fellow Indians and my 100 million Jio users..." starts Ambani. He confirms that Jio has crossed 100 million users.
Update: The livestream and press conference is now starting. Ambani is on the stage.
Update: Yes, we are still waiting for the live stream to start. Jio has big plans for future. First of all it has to start the paid service, which is something that Ambani may talk about today. Then there is the big Jio plan for the Jio Fibre, which is going to be a wired internet service. Jio is already testing the Fibre in some areas of Mumbai and that too comes with the free service for the first three months. Then there are plans around the content services and apps. Just yesterday Jio tied up with Uber for JioMoney a wallet app. Just like WhatsApp that can be used from inside Uber app to pay for rides, Uber users will now be able to do the same with the JioMoney app.
Update: To recap, Jio SIM is available publicly and for free since September 5 last year. Initially the service was good. But then more people joined the network and the extra load made the service suffer. The 4G speed of Jio went down. But after the Happy New Year rolled out with its 1GB per day limit of fair use policy (FUP), the service has improved. The speed, although not blazing fast, is more consistent.
Update: It seems that there is some delay in the live stream. It was supposed to start at 1.30PM. But so far it hasn't.
Update: The last two times when Mukesh Ambani made Jio announcements, he offered free Jio services. The first time it was in the first week of September when he announced the availability of Jio services with the Welcome Offer. The second time it was in the first week of December when he announced the Happy New Year offer, extending the Jio free services until March 31. Will today be the same? Will there another extension of free Jio services... we will know in a while.
Update: You can watch the Jio announcement live stream on the following YouTube video.
